Dear HSPs,

There's a lot to read here, but first some news and events. Scroll down and see.

News

Sweden: I recently received an email with this subject line: "Swedish HSP tsunami." It was from Else Marie Gudel, "our HSP in Sweden" (although she actually lives in Switzerland right now). She has put up a website in Swedish based on hsperson.com, and just in time. Here's what she reports:

"Just a short note to tell you that the articles in the Swedish daily have provoked an HSP tsunami in Sweden! The newspaper office has received thousands of mails and the first article, for which you were interviewed, was recommended by 6,200 people to friends on Facebook. Me too, I have received quite a few mails and my website has so far had more than 25,000 visits. So this is really great and overwhelming, to say the least!"

It's so good that Else Marie is there to keep the record straight.

New York, NY: May 4, HSPs were on the eleven o'clock news. As always, publicity for HSPs always includes a bit of a knife twist. This sounds pretty negative. But still, this year has been a good one for getting the word out, with Psychology Today, Time magazine, and things like this CBS New York coverage. It does at least encourage them to take the test for "hyper sensitivity" at this website.

To watch it, scroll down a bit to the video connection.

Los Angeles, CA May 15, this CBS station played the New York story, but allowed me to insert a bit at the end about most of us being okay!

Israel: Finally, The Highly Sensitive Child has come out in Israel. We can all imagine what a help that will be to certain parents and children living there.

Upcoming Events

Gatherings: It's so wonderful that Jacquelyn, Strickland, LPC, has made these available all these years and developed wisdom, skills, and materials that HSPs find so helpful. Here's a list of gatherings she has lined up for us:

  • Santa Cruz, CA: There are only a few spaces available for the 24th HSP Gathering, to be held June 7-11, 2012, at Land of Medicine Buddha. Registration ends June 1st. Santa Cruz is a perfect place for a little summer fun before or after the gathering. I'll be there on Sunday morning, June 10th, speaking about our spirituality. Jacquelyn will share "Integrated Wholeness of the Heart" in the afternoon. There is also a Sunday Only option. To register, go to http://lifeworkshelp.com/hspgathering.htm
  • North Carolina: The 25th HSP Gathering Retreat will be held Oct 25-29 at Montreat Conference Center, Montreat, North Carolina (just 15 miles from Asheville, NC). I will join the group on Sunday, Oct 28 via teleconference. Unlike other Gatherings, Jacquelyn suggests that you come "with a well-developed understanding of the HSP trait, as we will use the Myers Briggs and the Enneagram to further ground our sense of self as HSPs as we learn to authentically move through the world as compassionate observers of self and others." Jacquelyn has been certified to utilize the Myers Briggs since 1991 and also uses the Enneagram in her work.
  • Stockholm, Sweden: The 26th HSP Gathering Retreat will be held near Stockholm, Sweden May 9-13th. Details forthcoming. I plan to be there, hopefully coinciding with the publication of The Highly Sensitive Person in Swedish, where the rights were just sold.

Other Events Where I Will Be Speaking:

  • Finally, the Midwest! On Saturday, September 29, Candy Crawford, LCSW, will host a retreat for HSPs in Wheaton, IL, at the lovely Loretto Center, which we will have all to ourselves. It is not more than an hour from O'Hare airport (maybe faster, depending on traffic) or Midway (a little farther but less traffic). If you need a room for Friday or Saturday night, there are rooms available. I will be there for the whole day, helping inaugurate what we hope will become a regular Midwest event. For more information and to register: Candycrawfordlcsw.com/retreat
  • Mill Valley, CA: On the evening of Friday November 16, 7 pm, I will be speaking at the Academy of Intuitive Medicine. To register, go to http://www.intuitionmedicine.com/academy/
  • Kripalu, Western Massachusetts: April 26-28, 2013, a course which they have titled "A Weekend for Highly Sensitive People with Elaine Aron." It should be very restful. I love the nourishing food and soft energy at Kripalu, just right for HSPs whether into yoga or not.

A Chance to Have a Speaker in Southern California

Janine Ramsey, an HSP from Australia who I understand is doing excellent, lively presentations there about our trait, is coming to Southern California Septemever 1-10 and would like to speak "to the corporate market about HSPs in the work place," and to "swim teachers, elementary teachers, and parents on the HSC." Anyone with contacts to help her (businesses large enough to have an HR department, swim schools, elementary schools either public or private, parent education venues, etc.) should contact her at sensitivepersonality@gmail.com

Ten Tips for Highly Sensitive People, a very nice blog based on Ted Zeff's work that reminds us of what we need in a nice, succinct way.

In closing, I suspect that many of us feel especially good in late spring, when the days are lengthening and not so cold and not yet too hot either. Do find the time to be outdoors, and, in between, to take moments to look out the window. Even open it to hear the little dinosaurs sing. We do need to feel in our soul and psyche the wonder of the yearly rebirth of life.
